Here is a message from HH Bhakticaru Maharaja to the PAMHO conference BCS Istagosthi, encouraging us to pay as much attention to Srila Prabhupada's Bhagavad-Gita as to our cell phones. While there is plenty of room for improvement in my Gita study habits, I don't pay much attention to my mobile phone; but I see many others, teenagers mostly, fiddling around with their phones all the time.

For many cell phones have become indispensible accessories; they would as soon leave home naked than leave without their phones. While it would be good to carry Bhagavad-Gita with us at all times, I doubt if many will adopt this practice. For those who own an iPhone or iPod-touch, though, this has become a lot easier now, thanks to Vinod Bihari Prabhu, who adapted some of the texts available at vedabase.net for use with these devices. First Maharaja's message:

Cell Phone vs. Bhagavad-Gita

Hare Krsna!

I have recieved this mail from one devotee and found it to be very instructive and thought provoking. Therefore, I am posting it here for all of you to think about it deeply and benefit from it.

Wonder what would happen if we treated our Bhagavad-Gita like we treat our cell phone?

  • What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?
  • What if we flipped through it several times a day?
  • What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?
  • What if we used it to receive messages from the text?
  • What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it?
  • What if we gave it to Kids as gifts?
  • What if we used it when we travelled?
  • What if we used it in case of emergency?

This is something to make you go... hmm. Where is my Bhagavad-Gita?

Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phone, we don't have to worry about our Bhagavad-Gita being disconnected because Lord Krishna already paid the bill.

Makes you stop and think "where are my priorities?" No rejected calls! No flat battery! No "pls call me's" coz He will call on you all the time!

Srila Prabhupada's Books on Your iPhone / iPod-touch

At this time the following books are available for download into these devices:

  • Nectar of Instruction
  • Brahma Samhita
  • Nectar of Devotion
  • Caitanya Caritamrta
  • Srimad Bhagavatam

You can download them using the XML installer files at these locations:

Other websites are likely to include these installation files in the  future, too. If you don't know how to install books into your iPod / iPhone, just follow these instructions provided by Candidasa Prabhu:

Instructions:

Haribol, the installer on my server works with the latest version of the eBook reader (and probably also with older versions). This will only work with a "jailbroken" iPhone or iPod touch. The so-called "jailbreak" allows you to install custom applications on the device. Any iphone / ipod-touch firmware version should work fine.

"Jailbreak" your iPhone or iPod touch using either:

Once "jailbroken," the installer application will probably be installed automatically. If not, follow these instructions on how to install it: http://iphone.nullriver.com/beta/.

  • Go to Settings -> General -> Auto-Lock: Never
    (to temporarily disable the sleep-mode of the iPhone/iPod-touch, so it doesn't fall asleep while downloading the rather large books);
  • Launch the Installer.app on the device;
  • Add this repository to your Installer "Sources" (beware of the spell-checker changing the capitalization—it should all be lower-case): http://www.deltaflow.com/installer/ipod.xml;
  • Navigate to the "Install" list and select "Productivity." Install the "Books" application;
  • Navigate to the "Install" list and select "eBooks." Choose your desired book and follow the on screen instructions. Nectar of Devotion, Nectar of Instruction, Brahma Samhita, Srimad-Bhavagatam, and Caitanya Caritamrita are available. The install could take quite a while and it might look like the device has "frozen." Don't worry, just let it do its thing and it will complete eventually;
  • Start the "Books" application and read your book;

your servant,
Candidasa dasa

scriptures on blackberry

Hare Krishna. I got a BlackBerry a few months ago with "unlimited" web access, and with it I've been spending a great deal of time on the Vedabase.net web site. Not only that, but devotee blogs are sent to my rss reader throughout the day so I can get nice association even in my cubicle at work. When someone calls me, the phone plays Srila Prabhupada chanting the mahamantra, and it has an alarm that wakes me up to Hare Krishna kirtana. Often I carry it around with Srila Prabhupada's audio playing out the speaker. Of course history has irrefutably proven that we can live without these devices, but they can certainly be put to good use.

When I go out, there are four things I make sure I have: wallet, keys, phone, and japa bag. The japa bag fits that bulleted list beside HH Bhakti Caru Swami's picture fairly well.

With Bhagavad-gita, I don't exactly carry one with me everywhere, but there are a few at home, one in each car, one in my cubicle, and one on loan with a coworker (hoping he'll want to keep it).

Hare Krishna. Nice article.

as long as it lasts...

i've never used iPod or blackberry and don't know what type of internet experience you get using them. my low-end cell phone, while it's got GPRS with EDGE protocol, has a screen that would make actual reading a painful experience.

if you can access vedabase.net directly,though, you won't need the eBooks mentioned in this article—you've got them already, and more (as long as you don't move out of your provider's coverage).

you might be interested in another website i'm going to write about soon, iskconmedia.com, which offers a huge variety of srila prabhupada's lectures and pictures.

you're right, these gadgets aren't really necessary for spritual life, often rather a distraction, but they can be put to good use—yukta vairagya. let's use them as long as they are available, because i don't think this so-called civilization will last much longer. (of course, there have been plenty of 'doomsday' predictions, none of them anywhere accurate. i don't know if our present way of life on this planet will last for another 5, 500, or 5,000 years, but i'd be surprised if it was the latter.)
