Importance

ISKCON aims to bring the holy name to every town and village, and this program is helpful in fulfilling this vision. If properly implemented, there will be massive harinama sankirtana festivals across the planet every year, generating a tremendous amount of media interest and coverage. Every year, devotees around the world will share their ideas on spreading and glorifying the holy name, resulting in an increased focus on the chanting of the holy names.

This year, World Holy Name Week will be observed from 13–21 September; this nine day period includes the following auspicious tithis:

Dates

  • Saturday, 13 September: Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura's Appearance Day
  • Sunday, 14 September: Srila Haridas Thakura's Disappearance Day
  • Monday, 15 September: Acceptance of sannyasa by Srila Prabhupada (also: Sri Visvarupa Mahotsava; beginning of the third month of Caturmasya, fasting from milk)
  • Sunday, 21 September: Srila Prabhupada's arrival in the USA

Suggestions:

Please celebrate World Holy Name Week on as many of these days as possible. Some Suggestions:

  • Organize 24-hour kirtanas at your temple, center, or home;
  • Organize special kirtanas for gurukulis, youths, children, vaisnavis, or elderly devotees;
  • Organize interfaith dialogs with other communities, focusing on the Lord's holy names;
  • Harinam-centered drama performances;
  • Organize seminars and classes about the holy name;

Please send reports of your World Holy Name Week activities to Parasurama Prabhu.

GBC Resolution 318: Annual World Holy Name Week

[Action Order]

Whereas in 2007, the World Holy Name Day celebration was a successful program;

Whereas some temples observed the World Holy Name celebration for more than one day;

Whereas many temples celebrated on different days within a one-week time span;

RESOLVED: That the World Holy Name Day Resolution passed by the GBC in 2007 is modified to World Holy Name Week.

Centers are encouraged to celebrate for one day within the one-week time frame. They are welcome to also celebrate more than one day, if desired.

World Holy Name Week is an annual program for all ISKCON centers. Different countries or continents can modify the title as needed.

The observance of World Holy Name Week is to be held in connection with Srila Prabhupada’s arrival in the USA (Sept. 17, 1965) to coincide with and commemorate his delivering the gift of the holy name to the world.

The Global Coordination Team for World Holy Name Day -- Lokanath Swami, Janananda Goswami, and Ekalavya Das -- shall coordinate this now-expanded festival.
